STMWK STEPS 2018: WeDigitUP

Establishment of a central coordination office for academic continuing education with a focus on digitisation at the University of Passau

The "WeDigitUP" project promotes the sustainable and strategic expansion of academic continuing education at the University of Passau.

As part of the "wellUP" project, an overall concept for the area of academic continuing education and lifelong learning at the University of Passau has already been drawn up. The conceptual considerations it contains show how the University of Passau can fundamentally position itself as a provider of continuing academic education and a place of lifelong learning. This continuing education concept, which was adopted by the university management in December 2017, is intended to serve as a basis for the strategic development of sustainable continuing education structures at the University of Passau by identifying promising possibilities for subject-specific orientations, offer formats and internal organisational forms in the area of continuing education. Following on from wellUP (project end on 31 December 2017), the STEPS 2018 programme now offers the University of Passau the opportunity to take the next step into practical implementation and to drive forward the structural development of continuing education at the University of Passau by taking measures to expand regional continuing education structures and to strategically build a profile and develop a portfolio in the area of continuing education.

The Project

Within the project, the area of continuing education and lifelong learning at the Transfer Centre of the University of Passau will be staffed with a consultant. The Institute CENTOURIS supports this position - in accordance with its core competencies - to take on the needs, market and target group analyses and to provide advice on the development of marketing and the process of brand building.

In the period from November 2018 to June 2019, the CENTOURIS Institute will conduct structured guideline interviews with seven companies located in the region (two medium-sized companies, five large companies). The interview partners are managing directors, persons in charge of human resources or further education managers of the respective company. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture, the interviews are conducted with companies from different sectors: Construction machinery, commercial vehicles, automotive suppliers, electronics, IT, clothing, financial services.

The aim of the expert interviews is to determine the specific need for academic continuing education among regional companies so that the University of Passau can develop and offer continuing education programmes that are as tailored as possible in the future. Analogous to the focus in the WeDigitUP project, the needs analysis also focuses on the topic of digitalisation. The first step is to openly ask about possible future topics for the continuing education of the university's own employees, before additionally determining the concrete need with regard to predefined topics on various challenges posed by digitisation.

The main goal of the project is to develop a continuing education profile and portfolio that conforms to the profile and mission statement of the University of Passau. In order to achieve this, a central coordination office for academic continuing education with a focus on digitalisation is to be established at the Transfer Centre of the University of Passau as part of STEPS 2018. The existing continuing education concept, which forms the basis for the development of sustainable continuing education structures at the University of Passau, identifies potential for continuing education offerings, although primarily the supply side is considered. In order to achieve the development goal, it is absolutely necessary to also investigate the demand side in a well-founded manner. Specifically, it is a matter of analysing which of the continuing education potentials presented in the continuing education concept actually meet with sufficient demand to ensure the sustainable development of a corresponding continuing education portfolio at the University of Passau.
